The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) is known for innovative teaching. A couple of years ago, they added another asset to their teaching portfolio. In 2012, EPFL was the first continental European university to reach out through Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). The courses are designed for students all over the world and are free of charge. Right from the start, 53,000 students enrolled in the online programs.

The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) supports EPFL’s MOOCs program, especially for courses taught in French. The initiative aims to reach people in French-speaking countries in sub-Saharan Africa, where there is a great need for engineers and technicians. In 2013, the EPFL program manager, Dimitrios Noukakis, began to establish MOOCs in three African countries, at the polytechnic colleges in Yaoundé, Cameroon, and Dakar, Senegal, as well as at the Engineering College of Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso.
